In addition to the 11 buildings funded under the partnership agreement and contracting authority of the Région Île-de-France, the initial Campus project also included the construction of the EPHE and EHESS headquarters, working spaces for other research teams, a gymnasium, and a nursery. On completion, the Aubervilliers site will host over one hundred social science and humanities (SSH) research units and projects.
Right from the outset, the Campus project was designed (as described in its overall functional programme) as a coherent, comprehensive site comprising over 140,000 m2 of working space, to serve research in SSH. In 2014, the Établissement Public Campus Condorcet (EPCC) acquired the necessary land to build all the planned facilities in Aubervilliers, thanks to state funding, while allowing for 40% of open space as stipulated by the Local Planning regulations.
NEW FACILITIES FOR RESEARCH AND LIFE ON CAMPUS
Although 100,000 m2 of working space has already been built, thanks to funding from the State, the Région Île-de-France and local authorities, the next phase of construction will enable Campus Condorcet to attain the necessary critical mass to achieve its ambitions for scientific excellence and social impact, which are the heart and soul of the project.
New facilities are therefore due to be built at the Aubervilliers site over the next few years, including:
- Campus service facilities such as a gymnasium and nursery;
- New working spaces for research teams, to achieve the site’s long-term objective of hosting over one hundred research units;
- The EHESS and EPHE headquarters.
WORK HAS ALREADY STARTED ON THE EPHE HEADQUARTERS
The construction process is already underway for this building. At the end of February 2019, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation approved the construction survey for the future EPHE headquarters, and for teaching and research facilities. An initial funding package was therefore allocated to finance the preliminary studies and design competition, with the EPCC as public contracting authority. Construction work will be funded by the Ministry, to the tune of €15M, and by the EPCC, which will contribute €9M in savings on the partnership contract through refinancing with the European Investment Bank, and €6M in proceeds from the sale of the Ined headquarters to the Régie immobilière de la Ville de Paris (Paris housing agency).
As of 2023, this building will enable the EPHE to bring together all its administrative staff, technical personnel, teacher-researchers, and students at Campus Condorcet - except for its natural and life sciences teams elsewhere in France and the Pacific. The premises will also house all the institution’s document repositories, which are currently held at several locations throughout Paris..
